Viruses and Disease

Students will compare and contrast the structure and function of different types of prokaryotes, eukaryotes, and viruses (e.g., compare and contrast genetic material, metabolism, organelles, and other cell parts). Lesson plan, accompanying powerpoint, and Viral Transmission POE Activity outline can be found below.

Classifying Species and Relatedness

Students will use appropriate terminology related to biodiversity, including, but not limited to: binomial nomenclature, taxonomy, phylogenetic trees, and morphology. They will also explain the fundamental principles of taxonomy and phylogeny by defining concepts of taxonomic rank and relationship, such as genus, species, and taxon. Lesson plan and accompanying powerpoint can be found below.

Students are asked to imagine they have found a new alien species and they are to classify the species in a way that other scienctists can classify them as well.
